National Mourning Alters Madeira's Folklore Festival Plans

In response to a national day of mourning declared in honor of the victims of recent earthquakes in Venezuela, Madeira's Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, has announced the cancellation of his planned appearance on Sunday at the 41st edition of the Regional Folklore Festival – 24 Hours a Bailar.

Despite the change in plans, Maciel will still attend the festival on Saturday, which is set to take place in Santana, a picturesque town located on the northeastern coast of Madeira Island. The festival, known for its vibrant celebration of Madeira’s rich cultural heritage, is also aligned with the 36th Regional Fair of Municipalities.

Organized by the Casa do Povo de Santana with support from the Regional Government of Madeira, the festival is a significant cultural event that draws both locals and tourists eager to experience traditional music and dances from the region.

The decision to cancel Maciel's appearance on Sunday underscores the gravity with which the regional government is treating the national mourning, reflecting a deep respect and solidarity with the Venezuelan community.

This festival is an annual highlight in Madeira’s cultural calendar, attracting participants from various municipalities across the island, each showcasing their unique folkloric traditions. The event typically features non-stop performances over 24 hours, hence its name, '24 Hours a Bailar.'
