The National Maritime Authority, in collaboration with the Maritime Department of Madeira and the Port Authority of Funchal, carried out a comprehensive training exercise from May 12 to 15, aimed at combating marine pollution caused by hydrocarbons on the island of Madeira.
The exercise included simulations of two distinct scenarios: an accident at the commercial quay of Porto do Caniçal, leading to a fuel and oil spill affecting the port area, and an incident at Ribeira Natal beach in Caniçal, which involved a simulated oil slick reaching the coast.
These exercises are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the island's readiness and response capabilities to potential marine pollution incidents, which is crucial for safeguarding the environment and supporting the tourism industry, a vital part of Madeira's economy.
