In a busy few days for emergency services on Madeira Island, several incidents have been reported, affecting both residents and tourists alike. The series of events began with a car catching fire on Avenida LuĂs de Camões, Funchal, around 2:20 PM on June 27, 2026. The Funchal Fire Brigade quickly responded with 11 personnel and three vehicles, but fortunately, the flames were extinguished before their arrival.
Simultaneously, a field fire near the Machico Health Center also called for urgent attention from the local firefighters. Five members of the Machico Municipal Fire Brigade, utilizing both a heavy and a light vehicle, managed to bring the situation under control. This incident underscores the ongoing need for vigilance in preventing wildfires, a concern heightened during the dry summer months.
Adding to the string of emergencies, a 33-year-old man was injured in a road accident involving a motorcycle and a car on Rua 31 de Janeiro, near a driving school, on June 26, 2026. The man sustained injuries to his elbow and leg and was promptly transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for treatment.
In yet another incident, an elderly driver lost control of his vehicle on Estrada Padre Alfredo Vieira de Freitas in Gaula, leading to a rollover accident on June 24, 2026. Despite the severity of the accident, the 76-year-old driver was able to exit the vehicle unaided but reported back pain and was taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for further evaluation.
