Sara Madalena, a prominent Madeiran deputy, meets with Venezuelan community leaders to address human rights abuses in Venezuela, emphasizing the need for regional political awareness and support.

On July 7, 2026, Sara Madalena, a deputy from Madeira, hosted a significant meeting with representatives of the Venezuelan community with Portuguese descent in Madeira. The meeting was spearheaded by Manuel Ferreira, a former political prisoner in Venezuela, who, along with other community leaders, shared harrowing testimonies of human rights abuses perpetrated by the Venezuelan authorities.

The primary objective of this gathering was to alert the regional political powers to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and persistent human rights violations in Venezuela. The delegation included Ana Cristina Monteiro, president of VENECOM — the Venezuelan Community Association in Madeira, and notable figures such as Lídia Albornoz, Alejandro Rueda, and Carlos Arocha.

During the meeting, the delegation expressed gratitude to the CDS-PP Madeira for their efforts in mobilizing aid following recent earthquakes in Venezuela. They highlighted the importance of this support during such challenging times.

Manuel Ferreira detailed the oppressive conditions faced by political dissidents in Venezuela, describing inhumane conditions in prisons. His account, alongside others, painted a grim picture of widespread insecurity that directly impacts many families with ties to Madeira.

The gathering also aimed to galvanize Madeiran institutions to take a more proactive stance on Venezuela, advocating for sustained diplomatic pressure and international condemnation of the Venezuelan regime's abuses.

Following the meeting, calls for continued diplomatic engagement and international advocacy were reinforced, seeking to address the dire situation in Venezuela effectively.
