Students from Ponta do Sol proudly adopt a bottlenose dolphin at Lisbon Zoo, promoting wildlife conservation and education.

In a heartwarming initiative, children from the Ponta do Sol primary school on Madeira Island have adopted a bottlenose dolphin at the Lisbon Zoo. This event took place on May 15, 2026, as part of an official animal adoption program aimed at promoting wildlife conservation and education.

The group, known as 'Pontassolenses Carinhosos', consists of second-year students from EB1/PE/C da Ponta do Sol. They have been awarded the title of 'Proud Sponsors' for their role in this initiative. The adoption program encourages young students to learn about marine life and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the bottlenose dolphin, scientifically known as Tursiops truncatus. These marine mammals are highly social creatures, often found in family groups, and are known for their intelligence and playful nature.

This initiative not only serves as an educational experience for the children but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts in Portugal. The Lisbon Zoo's program provides a unique opportunity for students to engage with wildlife and understand the significance of environmental stewardship.
