Madeira's PS Calls for Fairer Banana Prices

The PS-Madeira is advocating for an increase in the payments made to banana producers on Madeira Island, urging the regional government to heed the competition authority’s recommendations.
During a visit to the Regional Banana Showcase in Madalena do Mar, PS-Madeira President CĂ©lia Pessegueiro emphasized the pivotal role that banana producers play in the island's economy. "Without the hard work of our producers, GESBA's significant revenue from banana sales, totaling approximately 30 million euros, would not be possible," Pessegueiro stated.
Currently, only about 15 million euros of this revenue is distributed to the producers, a figure that Pessegueiro argues should be higher given their contribution to GESBA's success. She further urged the government to align its policies with the recommendations of the competition authority to ensure fair compensation for the local agricultural sector.
Banana cultivation is a vital part of Madeira's agricultural landscape, not only supporting local economies but also contributing significantly to the island's export market. The call for increased payments is seen as a necessary step to support these farmers, ensuring the sustainability and growth of banana production in the region.
