The Portuguese Parliament calls for an inquiry into the financial responsibilities of Madeira's new hospital project amid cost concerns.

The Portuguese Parliament's Budget, Finance, and Public Administration Committee has approved a request from the Socialist Party (PS) to hold a hearing with the Secretary of State for Treasury and Finance. This hearing will address the financial responsibilities of the State concerning the construction of the Central and University Hospital of Madeira.

The call for this hearing comes in response to reports indicating significant increases in the overall cost of the project. Recent estimates suggest the new hospital could cost approximately one billion euros, with completion extending well beyond 2030.

The PS emphasized that the new hospital is part of a Common Interest Project, which mandates financial contribution from the State. Initially, the Socialist Government pledged to cover 50% of the total project costs and has adhered to this commitment so far.

However, the anticipated cost escalations have raised questions about the future financial burdens of the project, the available funding sources, and the division of financial responsibilities between the State and the Region of Madeira.

To clarify these financial uncertainties, the PS seeks to interrogate the Secretary of State for Treasury and Finance within the Committee. Although the hearing has been approved, the date is yet to be confirmed.

The new hospital is a significant infrastructure project for Madeira, aiming to enhance healthcare services on the island. It is crucial for both residents and the influx of tourists who visit Madeira each year.

Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, making this project vital for maintaining its appeal as a top tourist destination.
