The Iniciativa Liberal has publicly criticized the Madeira Regional Government for failing to deliver on a €5 million promise aimed at modernizing the island's black scabbardfish fleet. This initiative, initially announced to enhance vessel safety and secure the future of the fishing industry, has not yet materialized into concrete action.
The black scabbardfish industry is crucial to Madeira's maritime economy, supporting countless families and providing a significant contribution to the local economy. However, aging fleets and bureaucratic hurdles have hindered the sector's progress, sparking frustration among local fishermen and political commentators.
Political Criticism and Accountability
The Iniciativa Liberal calls for transparency and accountability from the Government, questioning why none of the allocated funds have reached the fishermen. Humberto Faria, a representative of the party, emphasized the disconnect between public announcements and tangible outcomes, stating that the funds exist only on paper and have yet to benefit those in need.
In 2024, the government opened an initial call for applications, but none were submitted. Despite adjustments to the program in 2025, five applications were received but none were approved. This situation exemplifies a broader issue of ineffective public policy implementation.
