Madeira's Fishing Fleet Renewal Takes Center Stage at European Level

In a decisive move, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has intensified efforts to advocate for the renewal of Madeira's fishing fleet, a cause deeply rooted in the region's cultural and economic framework. This development was highlighted during the Black Scabbardfish Festival in Câmara de Lobos, a nod to the town's rich maritime history.

Sérgio Oliveira, a key figure in this initiative, emphasized the importance of showcasing the current state of the fleet to European decision-makers. "It was important to bring to Madeira those responsible for decision-making within the European Union, to witness firsthand the challenging conditions under which these vessels operate and to understand the daily struggles faced by our fishermen," Oliveira stated.

The recent visit of the European Commissioner for Oceans and Fisheries provided a platform for local advocates to underline the necessity for fleet renewal. This visit is seen as a pivotal step in the ongoing campaign to sensitize European institutions to the longstanding demands of Madeira's fishing community.

For years, Madeira has been advocating for the renewal of its Black Scabbardfish fleet, not as a means to increase fishing capacity but to improve safety and working conditions for fishermen. The PSD's stance is clear: the objective is not to expand fishing quotas but to ensure the safety and efficiency of the current operations.

"The renewal of the Black Scabbardfish fleet is a banner we will not let fall," Oliveira asserted. The focus remains on securing better conditions for the vessels, crews, and the proper storage of catches.

The PSD further assured that efforts to engage and pressure European entities will persist until tangible solutions are achieved. The party aims to continuously highlight the realities of the Madeira fleet to garner support for its renewal.
