Madeira's ADN Party Advocates for Increased Public Funding for Ferry Service

The Autonomous Democratic Nucleus (ADN) Party has proposed that the Portuguese Republic should shoulder 75% of the public subsidy required for the ferry service connecting Madeira with mainland Portugal. This proposal is part of an effort to ensure the sustainability and continuity of this crucial transport link.

According to ADN, the ferry service is essential for maintaining territorial continuity and supporting both passenger and freight transport throughout the year. The party insists on an international tender process to ensure transparency in managing the subsidy and service operations.

Maíza Fernandes, a representative of ADN, emphasized the importance of the ferry service being recognized as a public service due to its role in facilitating regional connectivity. She suggested that Madeira would be responsible for up to 25% of the annual net compensation, allowing the region to allocate at least 200 million euros for other regional commitments, based on 2026 prices.

The ADN's call for increased funding comes with the stipulation that the ferry service must operate year-round, accommodating passengers, vehicles, and cargo. This initiative aims to bolster economic ties and enhance transportation efficiency between Madeira and the mainland.
