Madeira Photography Museum Celebrates World Photography Day with 19th Century Techniques

The Madeira Photography Museum – Atelier Vicente's, in collaboration with the Five Historic Photography Studio from Sintra, is set to celebrate World Photography Day on August 19 with a unique program featuring the historical wet collodion photographic process. This event offers a deep dive into the evolution of photography with a particular focus on techniques from the 19th century.

Starting on August 14 at 2:30 PM, the event kicks off with a lecture titled 'From Light to Memory – The Photographic Processes of the 19th Century and Madeira's Photographic Heritage.' Specialists Filipe Barroso and Vera Gonçalves will lead the session, discussing the development of photography and highlighting the wet collodion process.

The program pays tribute to Madeira's pioneering photographers, including Vicente Gomes da Silva, Joaquim Augusto de Sousa, and João Francisco Camacho. After the lecture, attendees can witness practical demonstrations of the wet collodion process, showcasing each stage of this intricate 19th-century technique.

Continuing on August 18 and 19, the museum will host portrait sessions using the wet collodion method. These sessions, available for a fee, allow participants to take home a photograph crafted through this traditional technique. Additionally, one attendee from the inaugural lecture will be selected by lottery to receive a complimentary photographic session.
