The Serviço Regional de Proteção Civil (SRPC, IP-RAM) of Madeira, in collaboration with the Federation of Firefighters and Humanitarian Associations of the Autonomous Region, has officially opened an external recruitment drive for 42 new specialist firefighters. This initiative aims to bolster the island's emergency pre-hospital and communication services.
These positions are part of a strategic effort to improve emergency response capabilities on the island, as highlighted in the recent meeting of the Regional Firefighters Council. The roles are distributed equally across the seven Humanitarian Firefighter Associations, with each unit receiving six additional specialists.
Candidates for these positions will undergo a comprehensive selection process, including a 300-hour training program and a probationary period under real working conditions. The recruitment process, overseen by Commander Richard Marques, started on August 7, 2026, and will last for ten working days.
Madeira's Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Micaela Fonseca de Freitas, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that over 80% of the operational activities of the region's firefighter corps focus on emergency pre-hospital services. The new recruits will significantly enhance this crucial area.
Applicants can prioritize their preferred locations for placement, which will be decided based on their final ranking and stated preferences. This transparent recruitment approach ensures that the operational needs are met effectively across the region.
