Madeira Hosts International Forum on Food Safety and Literacy

Madeira is set to host the International Forum on Food Safety and Literacy, an event dedicated to addressing the challenges and opportunities in food safety associated with fish and aquaculture products. Scheduled for June 24, the forum will commence at 9:30 AM at the Electricity Museum – Casa da Luz in Funchal.

Organized under the SANIFISH project, the forum will bring together national and international experts, researchers, health professionals, and representatives from the fishing and aquaculture sectors. The event aims to discuss the importance of food safety, enhance the value of fish products, and promote informed dietary choices among consumers.

The program includes a series of conferences, a seminar, and roundtable discussions. These sessions will focus on the food safety and value chain of fish and aquaculture products, as well as the risks and benefits of their consumption. A highlight of the event will be the keynote speech by Fernando Real Valcárcel from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, addressing the topic 'Ciguatoxins in Endemic Marine Areas: The Case of the Canary Islands.'

The forum will also feature a closing presentation by Carla Lopes from the University of Porto, who will provide recommendations on fish consumption. The opening session will be led by Micaela Fonseca de Freitas, the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, and the closing by Bruna Gouveia, the Regional Health Director.

This significant gathering is crucial for improving the literacy of populations regarding safe and balanced fish consumption and empowering stakeholders across the food chain.
