The Regional Government of Madeira has announced the completion of a major project to enhance the water storage capacity at the Serra de Água hydroelectric plant. This initiative represents a significant investment of approximately €5 million, funded by the Regional Government and the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
This project aims to strengthen Madeira's renewable energy capabilities by increasing the storage capacity of the existing hydroelectric infrastructure. It aligns with the broader objective of integrating intermittent renewable energy sources into the regional power grid. The completion of this project marks another successful step in the government's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Project Details
The project, which commenced in July 2024, involved the construction of a new reservoir and a tunnel to enhance water storage at the Serra de Água plant. The newly constructed reservoir has a storage capacity of 4,200 cubic meters, while a 520-meter tunnel connects it to the existing Canal do Norte, adding an additional storage capacity of 6,250 cubic meters. This development results in a total initial storage increase of 10,450 cubic meters, with plans for further expansion to 18,000 cubic meters.
The enhanced storage capacity is expected to be operational by the end of May, in time to address the increased water management needs typically experienced during Madeira's summer months.

Pedro Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, emphasized the strategic importance of this project. It not only supports the island's renewable energy goals but also ensures better management of water resources, which is crucial during peak demand periods. This project is part of a larger strategy to secure Madeira's energy future through sustainable practices.
