This significant occasion was organized by the Madeira Promotion Association (APM) and drew in approximately 400 attendees.
The event featured a symbolic toast with Madeira Wine, historically significant as it was used in the original 1776 Independence celebration. The gathering included high-profile guests such as the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, and the Portuguese Ambassador to the U.S., Francisco Duarte Lopes.
Among the guests were not only representatives from Madeira and the U.S. but also influential figures from the tourism sector, media, and strategic partners. Notably, Christine Lawson from the U.S. State Department attended, representing the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.
In his speech, Miguel Albuquerque highlighted the historic bonds between Madeira and the United States, emphasizing the symbolic 'blessing' given to the U.S. by Madeira Wine at its inception. He also underscored the importance of maintaining and strengthening these ties, especially through ongoing direct flights from Newark to Madeira, initiated by United Airlines in 2025.
This seventh edition of 'Toast to America' underlines Madeira's commitment to preserving and enhancing its historical and cultural connections with the United States, ensuring the island remains a pivotal point of cultural exchange and tourism.
