Madeira and Azores Benefit from ETS Revision
Madeira GuideThe recent revision of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) brings significant advantages to Madeira and the Azores, recognizing their unique regional needs.
In a recent development, Paulo do Nascimento Cabral, a Member of the European Parliament from the PSD, has applauded the completion of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) revision. The revised ETS is seen as a significant step forward for Madeira and the Azores, acknowledging the unique characteristics of these Outermost Regions (RUPs) of the European Union.
The ETS is a cornerstone of the EU's policy to combat climate change and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions cost-effectively. It operates on a 'cap and trade' principle, setting a cap on the total amount of certain greenhouse gases that can be emitted by installations covered by the system.
One of the key highlights of the revision is the extension of exemptions applicable to maritime transport and flights to and from the European Economic Area (EEA) until the end of 2035. This measure is particularly beneficial for the islands due to their reliance on these modes of transport for connectivity and economic activities.
Paulo do Nascimento Cabral emphasized that these exemptions are crucial for maintaining the economic stability and development of Madeira and the Azores. He noted that the recognition of their specific needs as RUPs underlines the EU's commitment to supporting these regions.
