In a bid to improve security and reduce waiting times for passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area, Madeira Airport will be reinforced with 20 additional police officers by July. This initiative is part of a broader national strategy to deploy 360 new police officers across Portuguese airports.
The announcement was made by SĂ©rgio Soares, spokesperson for the PolĂcia de Segurança PĂşblica (PSP). According to Soares, these officers are part of a cohort of 560 newly trained agents, who will complete their training on May 28. Following this, they will undergo a four-week border guard course before being deployed.
The reinforcement comes as part of the PSP's contingency plan to address increased travel demand during the summer months. By strengthening airport security, authorities aim to streamline the processing times for passengers from non-Schengen countries, thereby enhancing the overall travel experience.
