The Machico Council emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to enhance the Água de Pena Sports Park, beyond temporary fixes.

The Machico City Council has raised concerns over the current development approach for the Água de Pena Sports Park, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive and integrated project. The Council argues that the recent interventions, while addressing safety and accessibility, are merely stopgap measures.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) representatives at the council meeting underlined that the recent investment of over €400,000 by the municipality does not suffice for the park's complete rehabilitation. They assert that the current plans are corrective rather than strategic, reacting to the park's degradation from years of neglect.

Highlighting the need for a long-term vision, the PSD proposed a Global and Integrated Project for the park's reorganization and rejuvenation, which unfortunately was not approved by the executive body. The party stresses that the current approach lacks the depth required for enduring development.

The PSD also noted that the municipality's actions appear to be driven by impending private investments exceeding three million euros in the area, suggesting that the local government is more reactive than proactive in its developmental strategies.

This issue highlights the tension between immediate infrastructural fixes and the need for strategic, long-term planning to ensure the sustainable development of Machico's public spaces.

“This initiative emerges not from a strategic vision, but as a reaction to private investments, demonstrating a lack of proactive leadership,” a PSD representative commented.
