Local Leaders Criticize Water Shortage and Urban Management in São Vicente

In a recent assembly held in São Vicente, local deputies from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) voiced serious concerns about the ongoing water shortages and urban management problems affecting the region. The assembly, which took place on Monday, highlighted several key issues impacting both residents and tourists in this popular destination on Madeira Island.

Elisabete Silva, a prominent deputy, raised alarms about the continued lack of potable water in various localities within São Vicente. She pointed out that in some areas, the water is contaminated, reaching households with sediment. Silva questioned whether the municipal government plans to transfer the water supply management to ARM (Águas e Resíduos da Madeira), a regional utility company, to address these issues effectively.

Additionally, Silva criticized the state of urban cleanliness, citing inadequate waste collection and poor maintenance of streets and public spaces, including São Vicente's Urban Park. These conditions, she argued, need urgent attention to improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the experience for visitors.

Jhenny Figueira, another PSD deputy, focused on the management of parking in the area. She questioned the fulfillment of electoral promises to create additional parking spaces and expressed concerns about the safety of school transportation. According to municipal records, there was an incident involving a driver without the necessary qualifications, which she deemed a serious safety breach.

Figueira also lamented the cancellation of a local leisure program by ADENORMA due to lack of municipal support, criticized the high expenditures on local festivals, and questioned the increased salary of a municipal lawyer. However, she praised the solidarity shown by the municipal council and the parish council of Boaventura in collecting aid for victims of a recent tragedy in Venezuela.
