In a recent educational engagement, Élia Ascensão, the President of the Municipality, imparted her practical knowledge on local governance to students at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP). This event took place as part of the third-year curriculum for the Bachelor's degree in Public Administration.
The session, organized by Professor António Ribeiro, aimed to provide students with firsthand accounts from experienced municipal leaders. Alongside Ascensão, the class also featured Gina Araújo, Head of the Human Resources Division, and Raquel Lourenço, President of the Municipality of Sobral de Monte Agraço.
The focus of the lecture was to offer practical insights into the theoretical aspects of local governance, particularly emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of municipal leaders. The discussion also touched on the intricacies of managing resources effectively and the unique challenges faced by island municipalities like Madeira.
Élia Ascensão highlighted the importance of financial management, proximity governance, and strategic planning in the context of local government. She also addressed the specific challenges posed by Madeira's insular nature, which requires a tailored approach to governance to ensure effective service delivery to residents.
Students benefited from the diverse perspectives offered by the speakers, gaining a deeper understanding of the operational dynamics within local governments. This initiative is part of ISCSP's ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical governance experiences.
