JPP Sounds Alarm Over Degradation of Historic Chapel in Câmara de Lobos
Madeira GuideThe JPP has raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the historic Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, urging immediate restoration efforts to preserve this cultural landmark.
The Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) has brought attention to the concerning state of the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, a historic chapel located in the picturesque bay of Câmara de Lobos, Madeira. This chapel, which has been a significant part of the community since the late 15th century, is currently facing severe degradation.
Nuno Freitas, a representative of the JPP in the Câmara de Lobos Parish Assembly, highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the chapel's condition has visibly deteriorated. He described the presence of holes and cracks within the structure, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention by relevant authorities.
Classified as a Municipal Interest Property since October 1993, the chapel is not only a religious monument but also an integral part of the cultural and historical fabric of Câmara de Lobos. It houses works by renowned Madeiran artists Nicolau Ferreira and Luís Bernes, further underlining its cultural significance.
Freitas stressed the symbolic importance of the chapel as one of the most iconic landmarks in the heart of Câmara de Lobos. He called for urgent conservation efforts to ensure the chapel is preserved for future generations, warning against allowing such an emblematic site to continue deteriorating.
"We cannot allow one of the most emblematic symbols of Câmara de Lobos to continue to degrade," Freitas asserted, urging immediate action.
The JPP's call to action is a reminder of the importance of preserving Madeira's rich historical and cultural heritage, which is of great interest not only to locals but also to the numerous tourists who visit the island each year.
