JPP seeks answers over 60 unoccupied homes in Câmara de Lobos

Miguel Ganança, a JPP deputy and councillor in Câmara de Lobos, has demanded explanations from the Regional Government, IHM and the municipal president over 60 homes that PSD had promised to deliver by the end of June and which were still unoccupied in September, according to Diário de Notícias Madeira.
On 21 March, Miguel Albuquerque and Celso Bettencourt announced that 15 apartments in Jardim da Serra would be delivered by the end of June. Ten days later, PSD deputy Sérgio Oliveira said 60 homes in the municipality would be delivered by the same deadline. The total comprises 15 units in Jardim da Serra, 25 in Ribeiro Real and 20 in Rancho.
The JPP said site visits confirmed that the developments remained unoccupied. Diário de Notícias Madeira also reported that three municipal apartments on Estrada José Avelino Pinto, in Limoeiro, which the mayor had said would be completed in June, were still under construction.
Ganança said that, if these were the developments covered by the announcement, the promise had not been met; if they were different developments, the Regional Government and PSD should identify them and show how many keys had actually been handed over. The JPP has asked the Regional Government, IHM and Câmara Municipal to state how many of the 60 homes have been delivered, which procedures remain pending and the expected completion date for each development.
The JPP also said two external communication and image contracts cost more than 7,700 euros per month on average, with the total potentially exceeding 10,000 euros monthly when municipal human-resource costs in the same area are included. Ganança said the spending was difficult to accept while families awaited the promised homes and called for the mayor to publicly clarify the total cost of the communication structure.
According to the JPP, a delay of more than three months means more time paying high rents, living in inadequate conditions or postponing important life decisions for people waiting for a home.
