JPP Challenges Rejection of Hospital Visit at Madeira's João de Almada

The political party Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) has raised objections to the recent decision by the Madeira Regional Health and Civil Protection Secretariat, which denied their request to conduct a work visit to the basement of Hospital Dr. João de Almada. This area has recently been repurposed to accommodate patients from the Madeira Regional Health Service (SESARAM) who have been clinically discharged.
The request for this visit was made on July 2nd, with a response only arriving on July 24th. The purpose of the visit was to assess the conditions of the facilities, ensure compliance with safety and quality standards, and engage with the technical staff and health care administrators to understand the service operations and any potential challenges.
JPP, the main opposition party in Madeira, intended to utilize this visit as part of their legislative duty to scrutinize government actions and verify the conditions under which public health care services are being provided. The party emphasized that the visit was crucial for ensuring that the facilities meet the necessary standards of safety, dignity, and quality for patient care.
In response to JPP's request, the Secretariat cited the lack of any statutory provision in the Assembly's regulations that would permit such institutional visits by deputies or parliamentary groups to regional administration services or hospital units. This justification has led to further criticism by JPP, who have expressed intentions to appeal the decision.
Interestingly, the political party CHEGA also faced a similar rejection when they sought to conduct a visit to the same facilities, indicating a broader issue of access to public health institution inspections by political bodies.
