The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has raised concerns about the challenges faced by home care assistants in Madeira, calling for their increased recognition and support. During a press conference held in Machico, a town on the eastern side of the island, the party's president, Lina Pereira, highlighted what she sees as a contradiction between the regional government's promises of enhancing home support services and the current realities experienced on the ground.
Home care assistants, who play a crucial role in supporting the elderly population in Madeira, are reportedly facing a reduction in resources and support. This has led to a decrease in the number of elderly individuals covered by the Home Support Service (Serviço de Apoio Domiciliário - SAD). The JPP argues that this reduction undermines the regional government's stated commitment to improving these essential services.
The press conference was strategically held in a less central area of Machico to draw attention to issues that often go unnoticed by the wider public. The JPP is urging the government to not only maintain but also to enhance the support and resources allocated to home care services, emphasizing the importance of these services in ensuring the well-being of Madeira's aging population.
