JPP Abstains in Funchal Local Accommodation Regulation Vote

The political party Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) chose to abstain from voting on the proposed Municipal Regulation for the Management of Local Accommodation Establishments in Funchal. This proposal was put forward by the PSD/CDS coalition in the Funchal City Council.
JPP's decision to abstain is rooted in the absence of access to the 170 contributions collected during the public consultation process, which the Funchal City Council had reported receiving. Despite repeated requests, JPP was not provided with these inputs, raising concerns about whether any significant changes were made to the regulation based on public feedback.
Fátima Aveiro and António Trindade, JPP councilors, emphasized the importance of regulating local accommodation to balance urban living, ensure sustainable tourism, and maintain economic development. They noted that while local accommodation is a crucial economic activity for many families in Funchal, it should not be blamed solely for housing issues.
'The public consultation seemed ineffective, as no substantial changes were apparent in the regulation,' said JPP in their statement.
Furthermore, JPP's contributions, derived from extensive discussions with experts and local stakeholders, were entirely dismissed, further justifying their abstention. JPP believes that a more inclusive approach could lead to a regulation that better addresses the needs and challenges of Funchal's residents and the local economy.
