The INATEL Porto Santo Hotel, located on the idyllic island of Porto Santo in Madeira, has recently been awarded the prestigious 'Noite com Vida' Silver distinction by the Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves (SPEA). This accolade is part of the LIFE Natura@night and LIFE Freiras projects, which aim to promote practices that mitigate light pollution and protect biodiversity.
This recognition follows the hotel’s previous achievement of the Bronze level, underscoring its ongoing dedication to improving environmental practices. The hotel has implemented advanced lighting management systems and adopted more efficient lighting solutions. These initiatives not only cater to the specific lighting needs of various areas within the hotel but also ensure the comfort and safety of guests.
Reducing light pollution is critical for the protection of several species, including seabirds, bats, and insects, which can be adversely affected by artificial lighting. This is particularly important in Madeira during the months of October and November when the young shearwaters, locally known as 'cagarra', leave their nests. The hotel has strengthened its external lighting management to minimize its impact on these birds during this crucial period.
The 'Noite com Vida' award is annually presented across four levels—Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum—to establishments that effectively implement sustainable lighting practices. This commendation aligns with the INATEL Foundation’s strategic focus on enhancing its environmental and social practices, thus promoting responsible tourism and contributing to the conservation of Madeira’s natural heritage.
