The pigeons began their journey at 7:00 AM from the merchant ship Jaime S, operated by Grupo Sousa. This operation played a crucial role in the success of the event, as it provided the necessary support for the pigeons' release.
Out of a total of 50 pigeons released, only four managed to complete the full 416-nautical-mile journey, equivalent to approximately 770 kilometers. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in the history of columbofilia, or pigeon racing, in Madeira.
Columbofilia has a rich tradition in Madeira, attracting enthusiasts and participants from various parts of the island. The sport involves breeding and training pigeons to navigate long distances, often over open water, to return to their home lofts.
