In a remarkable feat of endurance and maritime skill, four intrepid adventurers successfully connected the islands of Porto Santo and Madeira by traditional canoe. The journey, which took nearly 14 hours, was marked by challenging weather conditions and strong sea currents.
The team, consisting of Miguel Figueira, Carlos Lima, LuĂs Filipe Nascimento, and Cristiano Perestrelo, began their voyage at 7 AM from the sandy shores of Porto Santo, often referred to as the 'Golden Island' due to its stunning beaches.
Their expedition was not just a test of physical stamina but also a significant cultural event, aiming to revive traditional seafaring methods. Despite facing adverse weather, including strong winds and turbulent seas, the team persevered.
"From Ponta de São Lourenço, the currents were all against us," said Miguel Figueira, highlighting the difficulties encountered during their journey.
This crossing is the first of its kind, symbolizing a historical link between the two islands and celebrating Madeira's rich maritime heritage. Events like these highlight the importance of preserving traditional skills and fostering a sense of community and connection with the sea.
