Funchal, Madeira was the scene of swift emergency responses this week following a gas leak and two separate vehicular accidents.

Gas Leak at Funchal Restaurant

On April 27, 2026, at around 7:00 PM, a gas leak incident occurred at a restaurant located on Travessa do Valente in Funchal. The local fire department, Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal, dispatched 11 firefighters with three vehicles to the scene. The leak was caused by a gas cylinder that failed to shut properly, forming ice around it. The firefighters resolved the situation swiftly, ensuring the safety of the restaurant patrons and staff.

Accidents on Madeira Roads

Earlier that day, at approximately 10:26 AM, a 26-year-old motorcyclist was involved in an accident with a car in Gaula. The young man sustained injuries to his arm and ribs and was promptly taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça by the Bombeiros Sapadores de Santa Cruz.

A few days earlier, on April 24, a woman was injured in a collision between two light vehicles on Rua do Brasil in the Bairro da Nazaré. The 45-year-old woman suffered chest and jaw injuries from the impact with the front seat of one of the vehicles. She was also transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for treatment.
