Funchal's New Regulations and PDM Partial Suspension Passed without Opposition

In a significant move for both residents and tourists, the Funchal City Council has approved the partial suspension of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) and the new Municipal Regulation for the Management of Local Accommodation Establishments. These approvals were made during a recent council meeting and did not encounter any votes against, although they did receive some abstentions.

The partial suspension of the PDM was highlighted by the council president, Jorge Carvalho, as a necessary step to address housing challenges in the city. This measure is designed to enhance the city's capability to manage housing more effectively, particularly in response to increasing demands.

The new regulations for Local Accommodation aim to limit the establishment of new accommodations in residential buildings, a move intended to balance the needs of tourism with those of local residents. During the public consultation phase, several contributions were made to refine the document, reflecting a community-engaged approach to policy-making.

Additionally, the council meeting approved the Consolidated Accounts for 2025, demonstrating positive results with an increase in assets and a reduction in liabilities, which indicates strong financial health for the municipality. This financial upturn is attributed to successful applications for community funds, which are now integrated into the municipal budget to support projects in areas such as water leak control, culture, and housing.

In a gesture of recognition, the council also approved the awarding of Municipal Merit Medals to various entities and individuals, including the University of Madeira and notable figures in music, architecture, and social services, showcasing the cultural and social contributions to the region.
