Guido Gomes, a local municipal deputy, has voiced concerns over the current state of housing in Funchal. He emphasized the limited progress made under the Estratégia Municipal de Habitação (Municipal Housing Strategy) and the Primeiro Direito (First Right) program, both spearheaded by the Socialist Party (PS).
Since the initiation of these strategies in 2021, only 33 houses have been completed, falling significantly short of expectations. Gomes argued that many of the promises made have yet to be fulfilled, indicating a need for more decisive action and implementation.
The debate around housing in Funchal underscores a broader challenge facing many urban areas in Portugal, where the gap between housing demand and supply continues to widen.
