Funchal Implements Special Clean-Up Operation for Arraial do Monte

The Funchal City Council, through its Department of Environment, has organized a comprehensive clean-up and sanitation operation in preparation for the traditional Arraial do Monte festivities. This operation includes pre-event cleaning efforts, daily interventions during the festivities, and a significant post-event clean-up.
In the weeks leading up to the festival, municipal teams focused on clearing and cleaning road verges and drains along major roads in the parish. These included Caminho do Monte, Caminho da Portada de Santo António, Caminho das Tílias, Rua das Lajinhas, Caminho do Desterro, Estrada dos Marmeleiros, among others.
As the novenas began, the clean-up operations started early in the morning, concentrating on waste collection, washing, and disinfection of unsanitary spots to eliminate foul odors. Ninety-seven containers of varying sizes were strategically placed throughout the festival area for both general and recyclable waste.
To accommodate the influx of visitors, the city has also installed 15 additional portable toilets, primarily located at Largo das Babosas and Largo da Fonte. Public toilets near the Carreiros and Largo da Fonte will have extended hours to ensure continuous sanitation and restocking of supplies.
On the day of the procession, the clean-up operation will commence at 7:00 AM, mobilizing 57 workers along with various vehicles and cleaning equipment. The primary focus will be the main festival grounds, with cleaning expected to be completed by 10:30 AM, ahead of the religious celebrations.
