The Municipal Assembly Hall in Funchal hosted an impactful conference dedicated to the prevention of child abuse. Spearheaded by the Funchal City Council's Division of Health and Well-Being, in collaboration with the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth, the event was part of the national 'Blue Ribbon' campaign, drawing experts from various fields related to childhood and youth.
Helena Leal, the councilor responsible for Health and Social Affairs, led the opening session. She emphasized the importance of bringing the often invisible issue of child abuse into public discourse, highlighting its profound impact on children's lives.
Leal addressed the various forms of violence children face—physical, psychological, and emotional—that often occur in silence but have lasting consequences. She underlined the importance of collective and individual responsibility in preventing and combating these abuses.
The councilor praised the collaborative efforts between schools, security forces, health entities, and the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth (CPCJ). She stressed that only through coordinated action can effective solutions be found.
Leal acknowledged the dedication of professionals working tirelessly to protect children in challenging circumstances, emphasizing the commitment and mission-driven spirit required in their roles.
She also reinforced Funchal's commitment to children's rights, noting the city's recognition by UNICEF as a 'Child-Friendly City.' This accolade reflects a local strategy prioritizing protection, participation, and well-being for young people, with over 600 children involved in shaping these policies.
