Funchal food week to run from 21 to 26 September
Semana da Alimentação will bring talks, workshops, showcookings and community activities to Funchal, with a market and health space also planned on Avenida Arriaga.
The Municipality of Funchal will hold Semana da Alimentação at Largo da Restauração from 21 to 26 September. The initiative promotes healthy, sustainable and inclusive food through activities for the community.
The programme opens at 15:00 on 21 September. A 16:00 showcooking will feature Chef Gonçalo Bota of Casa Velha do Palheiro, alongside the UMA-Isoplexis educational activity "Plantas à mesa: descobrir e explorar".
Activities on 22 September include educational sessions, talks on the relationship with food and the psychology behind eating, and a showcooking by the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo da Madeira. On 23 September, the programme includes "Onde está o açúcar?", meal-planning and food-organisation workshops, and a showcooking by Vegmadeira.
The 24 September programme focuses on discovering colours, recovering health through food and the influence of Desporto Escolar on students' development. It ends with a showcooking by Chef Cátia Gonçalves of Life Spice. A Sopa Comunitária will take place from 11:00 to 14:00 on 25 September, organised by SocioHabitaFunchal and Centro Comunitário do Funchal with the participation of A Biqueira.
The closing event on 26 September will include an intergenerational physical activity and a SEMEAR picnic at Parque de Santa Catarina. Prior registration is required for participation.
Avenida Arriaga will host a Mercado Saudável e Sustentável and Espaço Saúde from Monday to Friday during the initiative. The spaces are intended to encourage more conscious choices and bring together local producers and traders.
Health councillor Helena Leal said the initiative is part of the Estratégia Alimentar do Município do Funchal, SEMEAR and reaffirms a commitment to more balanced, ecological and accessible lifestyles through collaborative action.
