The Funchal City Council has unanimously approved a proposal for an urgent inspection of the operational status of the city's fire hydrants network. This decision, driven by the Socialist Party (PS) councilor Rui Caetano, comes in response to recent fires in the Pilar hillside area, which highlighted some firefighting challenges.
The primary goal of this inspection is to assess the flow, pressure, location, and signage of these hydrants, ensuring they are fully functional during the critical summer period marked by high temperatures. The proposal also includes evaluating access routes for emergency vehicles in steep areas and mandates the cleaning of private and public lands to mitigate fire risks.
Rui Caetano emphasized the importance of this initiative not only for the safety of residents but also to protect the island's natural beauty, which is a significant draw for tourists. In the same council meeting, Caetano opposed the licensing of a new landfill for construction waste in the Monte area, citing environmental concerns.
The councilor also supported the launch of a public tender for a new housing project in Santo António, aiming to provide 71 new homes. This highlights the broader commitment to improving infrastructure and living conditions in Funchal.
As temperatures rise and the risk of wildfires increases, the Funchal City Council's proactive measures seek to safeguard both the community and the environment.
