José Manuel Rodrigues, a key figure in Madeira's political landscape, is the focus of the podcast series 'Rostos da Autonomia'. This initiative by DIÁRIO, supported by Madeira's Legislative Assembly, delves into Rodrigues' journey from journalism to politics.
Rodrigues initially aspired to study law in Lisbon. However, at the age of 18, in 1978, he was already the leader of the CDS youth wing and began his journalism career at the Jornal da Madeira, then under Alberto João Jardim's direction. This marked the beginning of a notable career in journalism, working for 'O Jornal', the Portuguese News Agency (ANOP), Rádio Madeira, and later RTP-Madeira, where he became a familiar face on television.
In a significant move for regional journalism, Rodrigues became the first president of the Regional Directorate of the Journalists' Union in Madeira, highlighting his commitment to regional autonomy by establishing a separate regional body from the national union.
Despite his success in journalism, Rodrigues later accepted a political challenge from Ricardo Vieira, leading the CDS list in the 1995 national legislative elections. Although narrowly missing a seat by a margin of just over 1,000 votes, he shifted to regional politics, winning a seat in Madeira's parliament in 1996. This marked the start of a long and successful political career, consistently being re-elected until 2025.
