In a recent parliamentary debate, Filipe Sousa, a deputy from Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), voiced his disappointment over the Portuguese Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation's neglect of regional issues concerning Madeira and the Azores. The debate centered around national exam problems, digitalization delays, and higher education access inequalities.
Sousa highlighted significant shortcomings in the digitalization of exams this year, advocating for a more secure, transparent, and equitable system for all students. He emphasized the ongoing inequalities affecting young students from the Autonomous Regions, such as Madeira.
During his address, Sousa directly questioned Minister Fernando Alexandre regarding three critical areas: increased funding for the Universities of Madeira and the Azores, the impact of the new social action regime on students from the islands, and measures to prevent this year's issues from recurring next academic year.
Unfortunately, the minister did not respond to these vital inquiries, which Sousa noted as a significant oversight. He criticized the government's silence on these concrete issues as indicative of its disregard for the realities faced by island residents.
Sousa expressed grave concern over the government's lack of response, particularly regarding the challenges faced by students from the Autonomous Regions who are studying on the mainland. He described the government's approach as lacking national perspective and understanding of the entire Portuguese territory's needs.
"When it comes to addressing the real problems of Madeira and the Azores, the government remains silent. This silence speaks volumes about the current administration's view and responsibility towards island residents," lamented Filipe Sousa.
