In Madeira, a concerning trend has emerged as many families are declining nursing home placements for their elderly relatives. The primary reason is the financial burden associated with these facilities, which is not a factor when patients are under the care of SESARAM, the Regional Health Service of Madeira.
SESARAM has been proactive in addressing these challenges by identifying spaces in Ponta do Pargo and Seixal that can accommodate various patient types. These locations are advantageous as they are situated above health centers, providing easy access to medical care.
Márcia Gomes, a representative involved in the initiative, mentioned that the Seixal facility could house 16 to 18 individuals, although the capacity for Ponta do Pargo has yet to be determined. In parallel, SESARAM is collaborating with Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS) to explore additional solutions.
This initiative represents a quicker and more effective solution to the issue, offering families an alternative to costly private nursing homes while ensuring that their loved ones receive the necessary care.
