European Youth Lead Coastal Clean-up at Madeira's Praia Formosa

In a bid to tackle the pressing environmental challenges posed by fast fashion, over 40 young people from Madeira, mainland Portugal, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Romania are coming together for a coastal clean-up at Praia Formosa, Funchal. This event, taking place on June 27, 2026, emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable practices in regions like Madeira, where waste management is complicated by its geographic isolation.
The clean-up, organized by the association My Madeira Island, is part of a broader European initiative supported by the Erasmus+ program. The event is open to the public, inviting anyone interested to join the efforts starting at 10 AM near the Beira Calhau restaurant.
Karla Gonçalves, representing My Madeira Island, highlighted the importance of action over discussion, especially in island communities where environmental issues are exacerbated. "Young people want to act, not just talk about sustainability," she stated.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the fast fashion industry, urging producers to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products. The clean-up also serves to highlight the volume of waste improperly discarded, advocating for sustainable consumption and fashion consciousness.
In addition to the clean-up, participants will engage in a workshop on upcycling, transforming used fabrics into new items, thus demonstrating practical alternatives to textile waste. There will also be a session focused on removing invasive species in the My Madeira Forest, contributing to forest fire prevention and the protection of the island's endemic biodiversity.
