Euro Notes to Get a New Look: Public Opinion Sought for Design Selection

The European Central Bank (ECB) recently unveiled proposals for the next series of euro notes, marking the final stage in a process aimed at modernizing the currency in circulation across the Eurozone.

Regular updates to banknotes are crucial to prevent counterfeiting, a practice followed by all central banks. The first series of euro notes was introduced over 20 years ago, with the second series following in 2013.

The shortlisted designs stem from a Europe-wide competition that received over 1,200 entries from graphic designers. Out of these, 25 designers were invited to submit proposals for one or both of the themes under consideration: 'European Culture' and 'Rivers and Birds.'

'European Culture' theme focuses on iconic figures from Europe's cultural heritage, such as Maria Callas, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, and Leonardo da Vinci. Meanwhile, 'Rivers and Birds' draws inspiration from Europe's rich natural landscapes.

A panel of 21 independent experts selected ten designs, and now citizens can express their preferences through an online survey available until September 21, 2026.

The chosen design will undergo further development and testing before production begins. The new series of notes will not circulate immediately; instead, they will be gradually introduced in the following years. Previous series will retain their value and remain in concurrent circulation.

This initiative not only aims to enhance security features but also to reflect the cultural and natural diversity of Europe, making the euro more than just a currency, but a symbol of shared heritage and unity.
