Euro Banknotes to Get a Modern Makeover

The euro banknotes, a staple of European commerce and daily life, are set to undergo a significant redesign. The European Central Bank (ECB) has revealed its proposals for the next series of banknotes, marking the final phase of a modernization effort aimed at updating the currency in circulation across the eurozone.
Regular updates to currency designs are a common practice among central banks worldwide to combat counterfeiting. The current series of euro notes was introduced over 20 years ago, with the most recent update occurring in 2013.
The new design proposals emerged from a European-wide competition that attracted over 1,200 entries from graphic designers. Out of these, 25 designers were selected to present their concepts based on two themes: 'European Culture,' featuring iconic historical figures like Maria Callas and Leonardo da Vinci, and 'Rivers and Birds,' inspired by Europe's natural beauty.
A panel of 21 independent experts from various fields has narrowed down the designs to ten finalists. The ECB is now seeking public feedback through an online survey available until September 21, 2026. The selected design will undergo further development and testing before production begins.
The new series of banknotes is expected to enter circulation in the coming years, while the existing notes will remain valid and continue to be used alongside the new ones. This redesign aims not only to modernize the euro but also to reflect the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Europe.
