The annual Madeira Rally, a highlight in the tourism calendar, attracts thousands of motorsport enthusiasts to the island each year. To accommodate the influx of visitors and ensure the event runs smoothly, the Câmara Municipal do Funchal (CMF) has implemented significant measures in both urban cleanliness and environmental awareness this year.
Urban Cleanliness Initiatives
In preparation for the rally, the CMF has deployed additional human resources and equipment to maintain the cleanliness of public spaces. Key areas such as Praça do Povo, the tunnel leading to Praça CR7, and Avenida Sá Carneiro are being prioritized for cleaning and waste management. These efforts aim to prevent the accumulation of waste and ensure the areas are pleasant for visitors.
Environmental Awareness at Parque Ecológico
Simultaneously, the CMF has launched an environmental awareness campaign at the Parque Ecológico do Funchal, targeting campers and visitors. This initiative, led by the Councillor for Environment, Paula Jardim, focuses on promoting sustainable practices among the 317 campers in 145 tents, emphasizing waste separation, good neighborliness, and fire prevention.
The campaign includes the installation of additional recycling points and portable sanitation facilities to accommodate the increased number of visitors. Enhanced security measures and the presence of fire-fighting teams ensure the safety of both the attendees and the natural environment.

These measures not only aim to enhance the experience for rally attendees but also reinforce the city’s commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. By integrating cleanliness and environmental awareness, Funchal seeks to ensure that such large-scale events are both successful and sustainable.
