On Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, Madeira's emergency services were on high alert as they responded to multiple incidents across the island. The day was marked by a serious car accident and a fire in Ponta do Sol, highlighting the dedication of local firefighters and emergency responders.

Car Accident on the Expressway

A dramatic car accident occurred in the tunnel of Viveiros on the expressway leading from Funchal to Caniço. The accident involved a light vehicle, resulting in injuries to a one-month-old baby and a man. Both were transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further medical attention. The Madeira Volunteer Firefighters (BVM) and the Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) promptly responded to the scene, deploying eight personnel and three vehicles, along with an ambulance from the CVP. The local police (PSP) and Vialitoral were also involved in managing the situation.

Fire in Ponta do Sol

Meanwhile, in Ponta do Sol, the Volunteer Firefighters from Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol were called to combat a wildfire in the area of Poios. The fire, believed to have been ignited by a hot air balloon or a rocket, was situated on the slope behind the former PSP station. The firefighting effort involved five firefighters using two vehicles, one heavy and one light, and took approximately two hours to bring under control.

Additional Emergency Response

Earlier on the same day, the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters were required to force entry into a residence on Rua Pedro José de Ornelas in Funchal to assist a man in his 70s who had become unwell. He was subsequently transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for treatment.

These incidents underscore the vital role of emergency services in ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors on Madeira Island, particularly during busy holiday periods.
