Emanuel Câmara, the PS-Madeira deputy at the Assembly of the Republic, has made a strong appeal to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports for more robust measures to combat violence in sports. This issue, he argues, is not just a national concern but a pressing matter for Madeira, affecting the integrity and safety of sporting events.
During a parliamentary session, Câmara emphasized that while some violence indicators have decreased, incidents of violence, the use of pyrotechnics, and racist behavior continue to plague sports events. These issues, he noted, tarnish the image of Portuguese sports and deter families from attending.
Câmara highlighted past initiatives under PS governments, such as establishing the Authority for the Prevention and Combat of Violence in Sports, enhancing enforcement powers, and promoting ethical sportsmanship. He urged the current government to build on these foundations with measures like improved access control and better cooperation between security entities.
Particularly concerning for Madeira, Cámara pointed out that violence is not limited to professional football but is also prevalent in youth sports, where verbal and physical attacks on referees, coaches, and young athletes often occur, sometimes even disrupting award ceremonies due to safety concerns.
The deputy's call to action is a reminder that preventing sports violence requires ongoing effort and collaboration between government bodies and the sports community to ensure safe and respectful environments for all participants.
