EEM Initiates Transportation for New Wind Farm in Porto Santo

The Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (EEM) has embarked on a large-scale logistical operation to transport the components of wind turbines to the new wind farm being established on the island of Porto Santo. This operation, initiated on the afternoon of June 5, 2026, is a pivotal part of the island's shift towards renewable energy sources.
Due to the size and weight of the turbine components, the transportation process is expected to affect road traffic, especially along the coastal road of Porto Santo. These disruptions are anticipated to last around 15 days, during which specific safety measures and traffic management plans have been put in place to ensure the smooth execution of the operation.
EEM has called for the cooperation and understanding of the local population and tourists, urging all to follow the signage and instructions provided by the teams working on-site. This initiative is not only a logistical challenge but also a significant stride towards enhancing the island's energy infrastructure.
The new wind farm, funded entirely by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), will feature two wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.8 MW. Combined with the existing 20 MW battery system, a 2 MW photovoltaic plant, and an additional 4 MW solar park, Porto Santo is set to significantly boost its renewable energy production capacity to 14 MW.
This integrated approach to harnessing wind, solar, and battery storage aims to enable Porto Santo to rely entirely on renewable energy during certain periods of the year, minimizing the use of thermal power plants whenever natural resources are available.
The completion of this project signifies an important milestone for Porto Santo, as it moves closer to achieving energy sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, making it an exemplary model of renewable energy use in island regions.
