In a heated session at the Funchal City Council, the political group Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) accused the PSD/CDS majority of postponing the redevelopment of Santo Ant贸nio鈥檚 town center. This accusation follows the rejection of JPP's recommendation to reinforce the council's commitment to the project.
The redevelopment of Santo Ant贸nio, a significant urban renewal project, is critical for the local community and for maintaining Funchal's appeal as a tourist destination. Located in a historic area, Santo Ant贸nio holds cultural and economic importance for Madeira. The project was initially promised during the last municipal election campaign by then-candidate Jorge Carvalho.
F谩tima Aveiro and Ant贸nio Trindade, JPP council members, expressed their disappointment over the council's decision. They regard it as a departure from the promises made by the PSD during the campaign. Despite the setback, the project is not entirely stalled; Jorge Carvalho has indicated that work is progressing, with the preliminary project expected to be presented by September.
A separate but related issue is the proposal for high-rise constructions in Funchal, supported by the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque. These developments could see buildings of 20 stories or more, which the current mayor supports pending a detailed study. This proposal ties into broader urban planning discussions, especially with the current suspension of the Municipal Master Plan allowing for certain development incentives.
