Cruise Tourism Reaches New Heights in Madeira

The cruise tourism industry in Madeira has achieved unprecedented success, with the port of Funchal emerging as the country's top cruise destination. This announcement was made by José Manuel Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary of Economy, during an official visit to the P&O Cruises' vessel, Ventura, docked at Funchal Port.
Between September 2025 and May 2026, Madeira's high cruise season witnessed an impressive influx of 791,707 passengers at the ports of Funchal and Porto Santo. This represents an increase of approximately 50,000 passengers compared to the previous season, which recorded 744,855 passengers.
In addition to the rise in passenger numbers, the region also saw an increase in the number of cruise ship calls, totaling 344, and a significant rise in crew members from 227,281 to 295,180. As a result, over a million people, including passengers and crew, were recorded in Madeira during this period.
Rodrigues emphasized the substantial economic impact of cruise tourism, noting that it contributes more than 60 million euros annually to the regional economy. He highlighted the confidence cruise companies have in Madeira, evidenced by their increased reliance on local products for supplies.
Addressing the future, Rodrigues pointed out the ongoing efforts to combat the sector's seasonality by introducing new maritime tourism circuits during the summer. The region is also preparing to implement an electrical connection for docked ships, further enhancing the port's infrastructure and sustainability.
"We have surpassed one million in total visitors, which underscores the trust cruise lines have in our region," said José Manuel Rodrigues.
The developments in Madeira's cruise tourism not only strengthen its position in the maritime industry but also promise enhanced experiences for both residents and visitors, contributing to the island's vibrant economy and cultural exchange.
