The Reagir party has expressed dissatisfaction with the government's recent unveiling of the Complexo Social de Santa Clara, a new facility intended to address the shortage of elderly care homes on Madeira Island. Despite the inauguration, the party emphasizes that the problem remains unresolved, with a waitlist of 1,200 to 1,250 people still awaiting placement in Elderly Residential Care Facilities (ERPI).
The new facility boasts 85 beds, but according to Reagir, only 20 are designated as social vacancies, while 15 are reserved for patients who have been discharged from hospitals but are still waiting for alternative social care solutions. This allocation, they argue, is evidence of the broader issue of insufficient social care infrastructure on the island.
Reagir's critique highlights a significant gap between demand and available resources, a situation they deem unacceptable. The party calls for more comprehensive solutions to enhance the existing network of social care responses, aiming to reduce the backlog and improve access to necessary services for Madeira's elderly population.
