The Portuguese political party Chega has raised formal questions to the Minister of National Defense regarding the alleged use of a military helicopter by Rubina Leal, the president of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The incident reportedly occurred on August 15th, when Leal was said to have traveled between Madeira and Porto Santo using an EH101 Merlin helicopter of the Portuguese Air Force.
The inquiry, officially submitted by Chega's deputy Francisco Gomes on August 19th, accuses Leal of using taxpayer-funded military resources for personal convenience. The government is expected to respond within 30 days, as per the regulations of the Assembly of the Republic.
According to Chega's statement, the helicopter was initially deployed for a medical emergency, transporting a patient from Porto Santo to Madeira. Following this mission, it allegedly remained at Madeira Airport to transport Leal, who had attended the religious celebrations of Festa de Nossa Senhora do Monte.
Francisco Gomes criticized the alleged misuse of military assets, emphasizing the gravity of the situation given the helicopter's intended purpose for critical missions. He demanded clarification on the legal and operational justifications for Leal's transport and whether such an action was officially sanctioned.
“If military resources were indeed used for personal transport, this represents a severe misuse of taxpayer money and undermines the integrity of public office,” stated Francisco Gomes.
The incident has sparked significant public interest and debate in Madeira, highlighting concerns over the accountability of public officials and the proper use of state resources.
