Chega proposes incentives to retain autism support specialists

Chega submitted a draft resolution to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira proposing incentives to retain professionals specialised in supporting people with autism spectrum disorder.
The proposal includes a Suplemento Regional de Fixação Técnica for non-profit social institutions working in neurodevelopment. Chega says the supplement would bring therapists' and psychologists' salaries closer to entry-level pay in the regional public administration's technical careers.
Chega says institutions have difficulty hiring and retaining speech therapists, occupational therapists and clinical psychologists. The party argues that the lack of professionals contributes to waiting lists and delays in early intervention. Hugo Nunes said the shortage shifts financial costs and strain onto families seeking answers in the private sector.
The draft also proposes a Regional Support and Capacity-Building Programme for Families with Autism. It would include psychological support for caregivers, parental training and increased social support for private therapy expenses.
The proposal includes a training and specialisation plan in autism with the University of Madeira and professional orders. It also proposes allowing SESARAM and Education professionals to work partly in the social sector.
Chega proposes programme contracts lasting three or four years to give institutions greater financial stability. The project is awaiting scheduling for debate and a plenary vote.
